Progressive Muscular Atrophy

by bluebottle228, Mar 19, 2008 03:57PM
Why is neurology so difficult to diagnose?  I have leg weakness and noticable atrophy of the quad muscles.  I am starting to get myself in a real state about having to say to people I don't know what the matter is but I feel very tired by the early afternoon and need to sleep, to have a bit of an evening before an early night.  I have had NCS which were normal and still awaiting the result of the EMG.  I am 42 yo female and have read that very unlikely to be PMA.  I do have the symptoms of loss of weight, and difficulty in maintaining my weight despite a good appitite, leg weakness and trunk weakness, tiredness and LMN signs clinically.  Please give me some idea of how long it takes to get a diagnoses, what other tests might be needed and what could cause these symptoms.  I am not normally an axious person but starting to get concerned now.  I had the EMG a couple of months ago - so the fact I have not had an appointment to discuss the results I am taking as being good news, or could just be I have a very bust neurologist.

Hi.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this, and you're right---Most 'neurological' conditions seem so difficult to diagnose.  (this is true in my case, as well).

I just wanted to send you good thoughts, and it won't hurt that by me posting to you--it will bump this up once again.  :)
I really hope Dr. Abhijeet sees this soon and gives you some direction.

Take Care,
T.

Thnks wingnut19 for your reply.  I hope I get to see the neurologit again soon but it's been 8 weeks and no letter fro even an appointment - I am wondering whether to ring the secretary but dont like to be a nuisance as I know they are all busy people.  When the bottom of my feet were tested (babinski) there was no reaction - but it was the same in both feet so guess this is normal for me as from what I have read.  I also have a weak arm.  My thyroid is out as well - my GP say my thyroid is working perfectly normally but it is producing too much hormaone as that is 8 and should be under 5 (TSH) so not sure if that is having an affect - although I am not on any medication for it so it must be OK.  So confused and feel a bit of a mystery.

Hi again....
I just wanted to check and see how you're doing, and bump this to the top again.....

Don't worry about calling your doctor and feeling like you're "bothering" them....It's their jobs!  It's also your job to take care of yourself and keep pushing when things don't feel right....You know your body more than anyone....
Call the doctor back.....

Take care, and let me know how things are going
T.

Thanks Wingnut,

I do have an update - i had a scan on my throat and have a small cyst and nodules in my thyroid - which could explain why I feel so tired and feel like i am swollowing past a peanut.  I have my neuro appointment in a couple of weeks time also.
