by alwaysthankgod, Mar 19, 2008 05:21PM
hello,
i am a female and i was just diagnosed with genital herpes.. my question is, is it normal for your vulva to get swollen due to an outbreak... This is my first outbreak and it seems to be getting better (the sores/lesions are starting to close) but inner and outer lips are extremely swollen... is this normal?

thank you!!

Yes, it's pretty normal. A lot of times your lymph nodes will swell as well as the surrounding tissue.  It's usually how I tell I'm about to have an outbreak.

thank you for that... but, what are lymph nodes??  Do you know if you can stay swollen down there even if the outbreak has cleared up? What can i do to make the swelling go down? Thank you!

Actually being very swollen with an ob isn't all that normal. It can happen but usually it's because there's something else going on like a vaginitis or something.

Because it's the weekend - do things like soak in the bathtub for comfort.  throw in a packet of aveeno bath or some epsom salts if you have either for comfort.  When you get out - go bottomless as long as you can. Fresh, cool air helps discourage overgrowth of yeast and bacteria as well as it cuts down on friction which is also helpful.  If you are still so swollen monday - return to your doctor for another exam and testing for yeast and bacteria for starters.

are you on antivirals?
