Chance of STD from unprotected oral sex

by penispain999, Mar 19, 2008 10:34PM
About 2 1/2 weeks ago I had unprotected oral sex performed on me by a girl i don't know, didn't even catch her name (but it was not a sex worker or paid for).  I'm married (I know i'm a bad person but i have sworn to, and already started to take steps to change the way i live my life), and about 10 seconds into the oral sex I felt so guilty and so ashamed i asked her to stop and apologized but said I have to stop.  I went home and didn't actually ejaculate.  About a a week and a half after this incident my urethra started burning and itching.  There has not been any discharge at all and it doesn't hurt to pee. There is just a slight burning at the very tip of my urethra.  I'm extremely worried about this. I know that there is a risk of stds from receiving oral sex, but i'm wondering if anyone more knowledgeable than I on the topic might know what the chances are from such a brief exposure.  Is the burning all in my head, created by guilt? Or could it really be an infection?

I went to get tested and the nurse did a urethral swab and looked at a gram stain under a microscope and told me she saw no sign of infection.  But she said it isn't totally accurate and they have to send a culture and a urine sample for testing the lab and i won't get the results for a week. Any information would help. I'm so scared about the results. I'm so stressed that I have only slept 6 hours total in the last 3 nights and i've lost 10 pounds in the last week because i can't eat. If the test is positive my marriage is basically over.  Am I making a big deal out of nothing or am i really at risk?

Your risk is low, and the gram stain looked for gonorrhea, which you don't have.  The other tests are probably for chlamydia, and she would have had to have that orally for you to get it from oral sex, and oral chlamydia is not at all common.

I'd say you have a bad case of guilt and shame, but you will know for sure with the results.

Is oral transmission of chlamydia really not that common auntiejessi?

I am totally freaking out as they say it is still sex and yes you are just as much at risk but cant find anything to back up that there is not that high a risk with oral sex alone?

Please help - I am at the end of my tether with stress!!

It really isn't that common.  Search through the experts forum here and you will see that they agree.

Here is a response from Dr. HHH who is in the expert forum.  http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/245804

He says never, I say rarely, but its close enough.  You aren't likely to get it orally.

I am in the exact situation - terrible stress, guilt and all, just went to Doc yesterday and he found a little fungal infection unrelated to the episode and its going away rapidly with some cream...I am changed forever.  He also thought it was extremely unlike I would have contracted anything. Just thought you want to know – pray about it and do something about it!

Thank you for your comment.  It helped me sleep a bit more. I have a follow up question if you don't mind answering.

So i went for a test 11 days after this incident (It happened March 3, and i went to clinic on the 14th).  My appointment to get my results wasn't until next week but i went on thursday for a walk-in because i couldn't take the stress.  I was lucky and my results had come back.  I was negative for everything (Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Herpes, Syphilis, HIV, and Hepatitis).  I think they tested me for more than i needed just to be safe, but better safe than sorry.  This is obviously a huge relief for me.  But i still have a concern. The nurse who gave me the results told me that 11 days i can be basically 100% sure i don't have gonorrhea, but that the syphilis test wouldn't be accurate at all at 11 days.  Now i'm worried that i'm not totally in the clear.

It has now been 19 days since the incident and I haven't noticed any sore or chancre on my penis. Should i be retested after a month?  Or should i just assumed if a sore hasn't shown up by then that i'm in the clear?  When would i expect to see a sore for syphilis?  How big would it be?  It wouldn't be something that i'd miss would it?

Thanks for your help.

I'm a bit freaked out by this because I just read an article that said the rates of syphilis in my province have skyrocketed from 5-10 cases a year for the last decade to 200 cases last year.

Syphilis is increasing everywhere, but keep in mind that your province probably has far more cases of gonorrhea and chlamydia, and keep that in perspective.  Syphilis is increasing, but its still not considered common, ok?

A syphilis sore would show up within a month to 6 weeks, so I would test again for that at a month from the encounter.

The size is similiar to a herpes sore - not all that big, but its painless, so if you aren't looking you might miss it.

DON'T panic and check yourself several times a day.  Once a day in the shower is plenty, ok?

And yes, your gonorrhea test is accurate at 11 days.

Do you know what i should be looking for?  How will the sore start out?  How big? like 1-2mm? What color? Will it be red or whitish?  I've been checking myself very closely a few times a day.  I've noticed a while raised bump right on the (I don't know the proper name) dark scar ring from where i got circumcised.  Is a raised white bump something to cause concern.

It could be nothing, it could be a wart.

A syphilis sore is red, usually roundish, and open.
