thanks for taking the time to read this, my sister is 19 and has cerebral palsy and just a few weeks ago we noticed a change in her. She was seeing insulation on the walls and just talking crazy. Her condition of cp was no where near a mentally handicapp so this was out of the norm. So we took her to the hospital and she had a urinary tract infection and it traveled in her blood stream. well we figured thats why she was acting that way. So five days later we got her out of the hospital and she was doing better. well after being home a few days she started acting crazy again saying random things like she didnt want to go to jail and she would tell me to give her teeth back. just weird things. so we took her to another hospital they did every test under the sun...MRI, cat scan, spinal tap and found nothing. after a few days in the hospital of just plain antibiotics she was doing better so we have her home again. Shes back the same way like shes mentally retarded. She goes to the bathroom on herself, dont want to eat, and even trys to get out of the house at night in her underwear. before the infection she could do almost everything for herself like eat, bath, and even carry a conversation. We just want her old self back. Do you have any suggestions or know anything of what may have happened.  thanks steph

Hi, probably she is developing psychotic symptoms. Please consult Neuropsychiatrist for investigation and proper diagnosis. With medicines these symptons can be taken care off.

There are chances of neurotic and psychotic complications associated with cerebral palsy. They should be treated.

I have a 6 yr old who has mild cp that worsens when she is sick.  this is attributed to metabolic problems.  Is your sister currently being checked in all metabolic panels that could signal neural degeneration from lack of proper metabolic balance?

I have a son who is 8 yrs old who has Autism, and anytime he's sick he's running around screaming, saying odd things, and acting very unlike himself. In fact the only way I know when  he's gonna get sick is that this behavior begins. I think it's typical with Neuro type disorders.

My daughter who is 30 now, has cp, epiliepsy and is developmentally delayed.  She is pretty capable, mind you, of dressing and feeding herself and carrying on a very full life.  When she was 21, she started on birth control pill because she hadn't had a period since she was 16.  It was prescribed by an endocrinologist to kick start her period.  She was only on the birth control pills for about two months because she was having so many siezures.  It was determined at that time that the pill was the reason she was convulsing.  Once we stopped the pill, the seizures stopped.  My daughter has been on some sort of anticonvulsant since she was a year old with good success.  That doesn't mean she doesn't have seizures anymore but for the most part, it is controlled.  How long has your sister been on the birth control pill?  I think it is worth looking into the possibility that this could be a contributing factor in you sister's current situation.  It would be interesting to know what the doctor on this forum thinks regard this.

she has been on different types of birth control ever since she started her periods. she is currenty on seasonique, but we made her stop taking them ever since she had got the uti in her blood stream so she still has not snapped out of this mental state. does it take time or will she be like this forever

I really don't know if she will snap out of it.  I can only comment on what happened with my daughter.  It took a little time (no longer than a month) and then she was back to the usual frequency and type of seizures.  Remember though, my daughter was only on the pill for approximately 2 months.

I hope you get a response from a doctor on this forum.

Please keep me updated on your sister.

I have not yet had a response from a doctor on this forum, but luckily my sister has never had seizures of any type ever. Her cp was just really a physical incapability not too much mental. Another thing is at random she will yell out names of people we know but will not of talked to them in years. Sounds like your daughter knows how to pretty well take care of herself considering her condition im sure it still gets hard to handle sometimes though. My family was so use to my sis knowing how to do pretty much everything on her own and now its like back to infancy. Its so weird and we just hope that one day we will wake up and she will be all better but thats just hopes and dreams. I didn mention but my sister and I are twins and I dont have anything wrong with me. She also has sculiosis. Maybe something will change.
