Miscarriage rate once fetal heatbeat seen

by jhh42, Mar 20, 2008 01:17PM
I had 2 miscarriages last year. I am currently 7weeks 4 days pregnant. I have had some brownish spotting early in the pregnancy. I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks 4 days and the baby measured perfect and a strong heartbeat was seen. I am still having on and off brownish spotting. Dr. is not concerned and said I could do this throughout my first trimester. What is the percentage rate of miscarriage now that a heartbeat has been seen?

Hello,

Miscarriage is the most common complication of early pregnancy. Eight to 20 percent of clinically recognized pregnancies under 20 weeks of gestation will result in a pregnancy loss.  Older women are at a greater risk of having a miscarriage.  The presence of a fetal heart rate is a reassuring sign and generally signifies a decreased chance of a loss.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

I am exactly 7 weeks and 4 days pregnant also.  I had a miscarriage last year in May. I do not know if this will help you or not. I have heard from an ob/gyn that the brown spotting is supposibly inplantation bleeding. Also that it is possible to have a miscarriage all the way up into being 5 months pregnant. What I would do if I were you would just listen to what your doctor says and as long as the doctor says everything seems normal than to just try to stay off your feet and rest. But my psychiatrist told me to keep taking xanax for 9 years and now I am still trying to get off of them. let me know if this helped at all

Brown spotting is perfectly normal in early pregnancy. One reason for this type of spotting is called implantation bleeding. This occurs approx. 2 weeks after conception and 4 weeks since your last menstrual period. Another reason this could be happening is your body could be releasing old blood. Neither of these reasons are cause for concern.

Actual miscarriage percentage among women is high; risk reduction and early care of HPV dysplasia found in a Pap smear and other STDs improves chances. According to statistics, about a half of all fertilized eggs end up miscarried before a woman even knows about the pregnancy. Hence, a natural loss is common and many women (about 87%) who have experienced one fetal loss are likely to deliver a baby successfully in the future. Actual miscarriage percentage among women is high; risk reduction and early care of HPV dysplasia found in a Pap smear and other STDs improves chances.

I read this.

Thanks for the website link. Since my first miscarriages were very early (prior to 6 weeks) I am hoping that now that a heatbeat has been seen and all looks good then all will be fine throughout this pregnancy.

So far so good. I have not had any more spotting for several days now. Maybe it is finally finished. I sure hope so.

I've read that risk of m/c drops from 20-25% before seeing hb to 2-3% after seeing hb.
