Can elavil cause rapid & iregular heart beat?

Are you aware that Amitriptyline blocks a certain type of receptor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and, consequently, may interfere with the functioning of this neurotransmitter on various organs. The transmitter, acetylcholine, which is normally released from nerve endings, cannot activate receptors that are blocked.

Did you know that the poison curare acts by blocking the transmission of acetylcholine. Some nerve gases operate by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine causing continual stimulation of the receptor cells, which leads to intense spasms of the muscles, including the heart.

Also the most serious adverse effect of amitriptyline is to impair cardiac function, leading to abnormal cardiac rhythms.  I experienced rapid & fluttering heart beat after being on elavil for just a few months.  I told my doctor and he said its nothing.  Then later I found out elavil can cause this so I stopped taking it and the heart fluttering & pounding stopped and hasn't returned.
