epidymectomy

by will_i_am, Mar 24, 2008 01:09PM
Hello Doctor,
For about the last 5 years I've had reoccurring epididymitis caused by a cyst on the left side. My urologist percsribed the usual treatment, antibiotics, support, etc. A couple years after my first infection, I started noticing blurred vision, and fatigue. About three months ago, I experienced pain and swelling now on the right side, with little discomfort from the left. I went back to my urologist, and again, treatment of antibiotics, support etc., this time with almost no improvement. During my follow up visit, he prescribed yet another course of Cipro, and suggested that the cyst from the left side be removed, there was nothing more to do. So naturally I trusted his recommendation and went through with the proceedure. One week later during my post operation visit I mentioned again about the swelling and discomfort from the right side. Again I was put on another 10 day cycle of Cipro. Here I am today, two weeks to the day after my surgery, with no improvement on the right side. I have been experencing for the last six months overwhelming fatigue, blurred vision, acne break outs, body aches and constant scrotal discomfort. I'm at my end here, I am 5' 9'' and went from being a muscular 195lbs to a flabby 173 pounds, I've lost my job because I can't be on my feet for more than a couple of hours at a time. I've been to my regular family doctor, subjected to multiple blood tests, he cannot find anything wrong except a slightly elevated white blood cell count, but says nothing to worry about. My questions are; What do you think? Do you think my other symptoms are related to my scrotal symptoms? I desperately need help, these symptoms are ruining my life!!
I certainly appreciate your time and input, And look forward to your reply,
Bill

Hi,

You are at this point 2 weeks post surgery.During initial assessment prior to the surgery, was a scrotal ultrasound done?In the scan, how many cysts did they identify and where were the cysts located?

At two week after surgery, the swelling and pain should have much subsided. In your case is there a noticeable swelling or redness in the area ? Is the pain in the right
side worst than before?

I suggest that you discuss  with your surgeon if a  scrotal ultrasound
may be done at this point.

Also, you have mentioned of other symptoms  like blurred vision and fatigue. Have you had this before? Your blood tests however showed nothing significant.Continue
to observe your symptoms.A scrotal ultrasound may be able to help.

Thank You for your reply,
As I mentioned before, I was diagnosed with my first epididymitis about five years ago, and experienced several attacks since then. My other symptoms, blurred vision, acne, and fatigue started two years after that. Yes, I've had three ultrasounds in the last five years. They revealed an epididymal cyst on the left side. It wasn't untill about three months ago I experienced pain and swelling on the right side, and body aches in addition to my other symptoms. It was than, my urologist recommended that the cyst on the left side be removed. Yes, it seems that the pain on my right side is now more persistent after the sugery, and the left side does appear to be better, but is still somewhat swollen. I will mention to my urologist another ultrasound. Is it possible that all these symptoms are related? Any input would be much appreciated, as I'm at my end here, these symptoms are driving me NUTS!!!
Thank You
