lung deficiency at altitude

by bazzer654, Mar 24, 2008 03:14PM
I have recently learnt that my left lung only partially works; my laymans understanding of the reason is that the phrenic nerve has failed and no longer operates a diaphragm at the base of the lung. This does not trouble me greatly on a daily living basis and I continue to exercise as hard as I can. However I had been anticipating a Himalayan trek this autumn and the consultant who diagnosed me was dubious about this but said he did not deal with the effects of altitude. I am seeking an opinion as to whether going to altitude (around 4500 metres) will further endanger my health.

Maybe your doctor can test how well you oxygenate at the altitude you speak of by using  what is called a momometer (sp?)...Here is a link that describes the test. I hope this helps!
