possible eating disorder

by reilly10746, Mar 26, 2008 01:31AM
Our 5-year-old boy is very bright and doing extremely well in kindergarden.  He participates in soccer, karate and basketball voluntarily.  We never force these sports on him, but he always requests to play and does quite well.  He is also very active during his down time and prefers to play outside or run around to watching tv.   We have noticed over the last couple of years, however, that he is very compulsive about eating.  He will eat as much as we allow and then try to sneak some more.  He is currently about 61 pounds and obviously about 5 to 10 pound overweight for his height.  Just this evening, while at a restaurant, he tried to sneak food off of his little sister's plate when he thought that my wife wasn't looking.
We are desperate for help, but are afraid to make more out of it than it possibly is because we do not want to scar him.  We have asked his pediatrician about this and been advised to "monitor" the situation.  We feel as though his eating habits are setting him up for future problems.  We became especially concerned when we found him eating in the closet.
Please give us some advice.  We would like to think that if we keep feeding him healty foods and monitor his portions, he'll be fine.  We are not convinced that this is the best option.  He asks about his next meal just after eating and spends a great deal of time talking about food.
Thanks.

Where should we go from here to get our son help or should we wait it out and hope for the best.
