I am not sure if I can relate very much - but on the other hand: What about asking your GP for anxiety relief/antidepressants? I mean... I wasn't aware of that my depression/stress was an anxiety disorder before I tried a sub-lingual Remeron 15 mg. Better be dependant of an antidepressant than something else. I don't dare having anything even with Codeine in my medicine locker at home - I might use them wrong in a bad moment of judgement... I just don't trust myself that much. When I stress out, I stress out over time.
I will never get sleeping aids, even if I have never tried to overdose on them. It's just a precaution the GP takes since I have moments where I sit still in a stairway just glaring - for hours. Sigh. Had I been able to sleep well, I'd have one better way of coping lol. I guess it's not always that the GP thinks the same way as us!
Bounce it with your GP, to have something that helps on anxiety too - in the moment. The melting tablet of Remeron works well, since it helps you relax in a short time.
Have you ever tried pilates? It works great to focus on inhaling and exhaling during stressy times. I'm not sure where you work as an RN but I'm sure there are moments of stress there too. For me it works wonders to take one single deep breath, get my shoulders down and unlock my jaws before I get into the action.
I hope you have good luck!
