Need Help loosing weight

by SSmile, Mar 26, 2008 07:01PM
Dear Doctor:

Presently, I am a first year medical student, at the Caribbean Islands. I have noticed that since I have started I have gain a tremendous of weight. Six months ago my weight was 125lbs for my height of 5'1, and at the present moment I weigh 147lbs.

I have been a vegetarian since birth, and before my diet consisted of regular meals and working out. Presently, being at school, and on an island where my resources are limited, I don't know how to balance my diet. I have started to go to the gym, spending about 40 minutes on the ellipticals. But what else can I do? My usual day runs: In the morning I'd wake up at 7am, get ready for class, and just run off to class without breakfast at 8am. Classes generally run from 8am to 12pm with 10min breaks at the end of each hour. They do have vender's here that sell sandwiches, and if I am hungry I will buy an egg sandwich. But lately, I have been feeling really guilty for gaining so much weight that, after that I really don't feel like eating. Usually, in the afternoon I get hungry, and I have adopted eating salads or going to subway and grabbing a 6" veggie delite. And then in the evening I will have something that I cook at home. With is usually an indian meal: of rice, with chick peas, or chick peas with the soft taco shell (2), or mixed vegetable and the soft taco shell (2). Some times I will make lentil soup and have that with rice.

I thought all of this food is normal, considering I trying to get the protein in. Its hard to manage a diet with my work consists of studying majority of the day. Can you please help?

I really appreciate the time taken out for me.

Thank you!

You do have a hard schedule with school. We need to eat something in the morning even if it is a piece of fruit and crackers because our bodies usually do not have food in it >8-10 hours from the previous day. Are you able to buy fruit during the day for a snack, which is a healthy alternate? You are young and increasing your physical activity will decrease your weight. Try to walk for 20-30 minutes between classes during the day and at night on a daily basis. The foods you eat from what you have stated is fine and good combos for carbs and protein. Hope this helped.
