Assault leading to fracture of the skull.

by PetePap, Mar 26, 2008 10:50PM
Hi there,

I was recently assaulted on late Saturday night, early sunday morning.  I went to hospital on Sunday and had an X-Ray and CT scan and they found a small fracture to the left of the bridge of my nose and another on my forehead.

The doctors said that the fracture on my forehead was close to my brain and so everytime I breath a small bit of air is entering my brain.  They said it's not too big of a problem and that I should avoid sneezing or blowing my nose as they were worried about infection.

The fracture itself would heal itself in a couple of weeks they said.

Now what I'm worried about is the air going into my brain, I haven't had any fluid leaking out of my ears, nose or mouth or anything.  They said i'd have a salty taste in the back of my mouth/throat if that happened and I haven't so as far I as understand for air to stay in the brain the fluid needs to make room for it?

The only pain I'm experiencing is a headache and on my nose and that pain is slowly dissipating, enough that I'm able to cope with just being on panadol and not panadiene forte.

So since it's been 5 days since my accident and I have no noticeable signs of infection am I in the clear?   I have read some stories of a pocket of air being trapped in someones brain but they mentioned fluid being leaked out in that case.

If I have no fluid leakage what happens to the air that does enter?  I have sneezed once but through my mouth and the only times I have really been worried is when I'd breathe in a bit heavily through my nose to unblock my ears.

I'm scheduled for another check up in about 4 to 6 weeks.
