John Hopkins versus Mayo Clinic??

My new neuro wants to refer me to Mayo Clinic.  She thinks this is definitely an autoimmune disease but doesn't think that it is MS due to the intermittent low grade fevers for no apparent reason.  I haven't discounted the fact that more than one thing may be going on.  Anyway, saw that JH has the big autoimmune disorder research center and wondered, if this is what we're looking at, if it might be the better place to go.

Any comments???

You must be getting very tired of all this decision-making by now.  How frustrating!

I think either hospital would be fine as long as you're not looking for MS!!!  

Actually, my sister-in-law was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at Mayo, as well as Crohn's disease, which no one was even looking for.  I have mixed feelings about Mayo.  If it's not for MS, I can say that at least my sister-in-law had success with two auto-immune disorders there.  That I can say.

Why does your neuro suggest Mayo over JH?  Have you looked into insurance issues?

I agree with Zilla on this one.  I have had a personal experience with the Mayo Clinic and it didn't turn out well.  On the other hand I know several people who wouldn't even think of going anywhere else.  

Research both places and check with your insurance before making a decision.  It's your life they are talking about here and it should also be your decision.  That's my opinion, which hasn't seemed to matter a lot in my life.  So take that for what it's worth.  hahaheehee

I vote for Hopkins.  They have very good autoimmune physicians.  Hands down Hopkins.

I really trust the opinions of people that have had personal experience, so it sounds like the majority is saying Hopkins.  Now to get your doctor to agree with it, so you can get a referral, which I suppose you will need.

Are you able to get the names of the physicians you would be referred to at both places, and check them out on Rate My MD?  I have found that to be a helpful and usually reliable site based on patient experience.

I vote for JH, been to the Mayo myself and it was like a factory.  Have a friend who went to JH and thought very highly of it.  In the end it really is all about the specific doctor you end up with.  Wishing you all the best.
