Harm with glasses

by mdkerr, Mar 28, 2008 09:06PM
We just saw an eye doctor for my 3 year old.  He was not a pediatric eye doctor, but does have patients as young as 18 months.  She was crossing her eyes about 10 times a day.  She has a slight case of far sightness (which I understand is normal).  It is +1.0 in 1 eye and +2.0 in the other.  He recommended getting glasses for her to use when she is reading, etc.  I know that there are some schools of thought that would say that this is normal and she doesn't need glasses.  Is there any harm in her wearing them?  Can it actually make her eyes not develop properly if they are not needed.  Should I go to a doctor that specializes in pediatric eye care before getting them?

Yes you should go to a pediatric-strabismus Eye MD ophthalmologist. Find one at www.aao.org    This important to get a second opinion. Reading glasses are usually not a good option for a problem like this (bifocals often are).
