my 4.5 year old is not potty trained

by the3monsters, Mar 29, 2008 09:15PM
My son will turn 5 in June and we have been trying to potty train him for over a year.  I have tried everything from charts, little rewards to making him clean and change himself.  I am at my wits end.  I have made sure that it is nothing medical.  Everyone keeps telling me to just let it run its course, but it is easier said then done.  He starts Kindergarten in Sept. & I am worried that he will not be ready.  Nothing bothers him, he can sit in it all day and he doesn't seem to mind that he is the last of his friends to train.  Any words of wisdom.

My stepson was like that. So last summer I let him run around outside with no diaper on buttnaked with just a t-shirt on. He had no problem peeing outside but he pooped one time out there and he thought that was so cool that he was like the animals and that he didnt need to wipe himself that he eventually came inside and did it in the potty. Just take away the diapers and take him shopping for big boy underwear that he picks out and that will more than likely be a good motivation.

I agree with MacAttacksMom, take your son out to buy underwear.  I did that with my son when we potty trained him.  He got so excited about his Spongebob and Diego underpants that we wouldn't dare dream of soiling them with any slip ups.  Just the fact that your son is wearing super cool underwear will motivate him.  You definitely have to get rid of the pull ups because he using them as a crutch.  He knows that he can wet or poop in them so he doesn't care if he does.

I have the exact same problem with my 41/2 year old and we have tried everything from sticker charts to an anatomically correct potty training doll ( recommended by Dr. Phil! ) to taking him to pick out cool underwear and to toy rewards for every time he goes pee, but nothing seems to motivate him. My husband and I are at our wits end since he is supposed to start kindergarten in September and schools won't take him if he is not potty trained! Help!!!!

We are in the same boat as you. My son just turned 4 and nothing seems to be working. He just could care less. I did have him a few months back over a long weekend in underwear but he would still go in them and not care. I am at my wits end too. I thought about letting him run naked since it is summer but my husband is against this. Anyone else have some advise. Nothing seems to work.

The running around naked does work for some kids. If you've tried everything else you may as well go for it.  Any husbands against it should have to give an alternate suggestion that'll work, lol.
