Disequilibrium with no obvious cause

by Shasta0, Mar 30, 2008 07:15PM
Several days before New Years Day of  2007 I had a relatively minor car accident. The impact was not enough to cause the air bag to deploy and I was not obviously hurt. My head did not hit anything and my neck felt fine. I even drove the rest of the way to the office and finished working. I stayed home the next day because I was feeling a little sore. On the second morning following the accident, I fell down and could barely walk because of disequilibrium. By the time I had arrived at the hospital and for the following three days I could not walk at all. There were other signs of trauma. I could not touch the tip of my nose with my eyes closed. I could not remember the day and date. I could not remember who the prior president was. I could not count backwards by 7s. These symptoms, however dissipated after about three hours. Despite all the overt symptoms, MRI and CT scans did not show any internal evidence of trauma. They ruled out neuro-degenerative diseases, stroke, normal pressure hydrocephaly, cerebellar damage and whatever else they could think of.  There was some hydrocephaly on the top of my brain but they did not think that this was significant. My vesicles were markedly asymmetrical but they regarded this as a long standing non-pathological condition. After three days in the hospital I could walk but only with a cane. I had to use one for many months.
I had  my auditory system examined but it was all ok. I saw another neurologist who gave me another MRI. He was not able to explain the disequilibrium either. Gradually, I have improved to the point where I do not have to use a cane but to this day, I exhibit the Romberg sign. I cannot walk heel to toe. I cannot stand on one foot. I cannot maintain my balance when I put my feet together. When I close my eyes I fall down. Because of this I cannot do some of the things I used to do.  I have had to quit taking medicines that cause drowsiness and drastically reduce dosages of even ones necessary to my mental health. I once took klonopin for anxiety and was so incapacitated by dizziness I had to be driven home from the office. It is very disappointing and disturbing that after all the thousands of dollars I have spent, know no more than I did when all this first started. If anyone has any thoughts on this please share them with me.

I have suffrered disequilibrium for about three years. MRI negative for lesions. Am on low dose synthroid for thyroid deficiency. I have constant headache in the back of my skull which increase as the day progresses and pretty much disappear when I am prone. Headache seems to blur vision. My neck is stiff, and the large muscles extending into the skull are sore. Prior to the onset of disequilibrium I suffered a bad fall resulting in a broken right shoulder, but had no apparent head injuries. I do have some bone spurs on neck vertebra, but orthopedic physician does not think they are bad enough to be the primary cause of my problem. Neurologist at local hospital could not diagnose problem and simply suggested a cane to facilitate walking. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
