Mom's diagnosis of metastized cancer

by zaksmom, Mar 31, 2008 09:30AM
My mom is 58 yr old.  She was diagnosed w/uterine cancer and had a hysterectomy (oopherectomy, etc) 1 yr ago.  Now she's told that the cancer has metastized to lymph nodes (aortic and well as pelvic) and both lungs.  She's quite tight lipped about it all, does anyone have information as to what to expect?  She will have a lung biopsy soon, and she will only do chemo if there is a chance that it will make a difference.  How long before the cancer will completely take over?  Is this something that a person can live until old age with?

thanks,
betsy

Hi.  I'm really sorry to hear about your mom's condition. Since her cancer has metastasized to the lungs, this is already stage 4 disease, so cure is not an option at this point, although treatment may still serve to control further spread of the cancer and prevent complications.  There's really no way of telling how long before the cancer completely takes over.  What I can tell you is that women with stage 4 uterine cancer only have around 20% chance of survival in five years, although this statistic can improve somewhat with treatment.
