BS & stress

by Fuzzy50, Apr 03, 2008 05:25PM
Hi.  I'm 57, female, diabetic for about 12 years.  Two months ago I started Lantus @ bedtime-6 units.  It does okay controlling my morning glucose level, not so much after meals.  My BS levels have been high, for me, for the last couple of weeks.  High being around 180-210 even before meals.  I have a colonoscopy scheduled next week and I have been stressed about it.  In addition, I have a small gum infection (recurring) for which my dentist does not want to give me antibiotics for fear they won't work if I really need them.  He did give them to me last time my gum flared up and it worked.  My question--could the stress of the upcoming colonoscopy and the gum infection be affecting my blood sugar levels?  I do intend to see my doctor after the colonoscopy to check on whether I should increase my insulin.  Can Lantus be taken with other fast-acting insulins?  I think maybe I might need more help.  Also, it seems the more activity I have, the worse my BS gets.  I am extremely frustrated and that probably doesn't help either.  One last thing, I have lost about 55 pounds in the past 2 1/2 years without trying.  I would like to put on some weight as I feel downright bony.  I don't really like meat much and am "dentally challenged" so it's hard to eat fresh veggies.  My BMI is normal.  Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Your recent stresses and infections certainly can contribute to some high readings. Lantus is designed to be a basal insulin, so it basically takes care of your insulin needs when you are not eating . You need rapid acting insulin or oral medications to cover those glucose changes that happen when you eat food, so I think you should definitely press for that. The blood sugar levels you related should certainly be brought down soon to help keep you well and prevent complications.
take care.
