anesthesia used in the 50s??

by downeaster, Apr 05, 2008 04:29PM
I can partially remember being re-circumcised when still very young.  It must have been traumatic for me as I don't remember much of it clearly--just snippets--but I do remember someone putting a cloth over my mouth and nose and blacking out.  Is this possible?  For procedures like this, was some form of anesthesia used back in the 1950s that was administered in this fashion, or am I dreaming this up??
