constant constipation

my name is jenny ,i had colon cancer 1 year and a half ago.i had to have some colon removed and dealt with a temporary ileiostomy.since the iliostomy has been reversed back in january of 2007 i have had constant constipation.my doctor tells me it could be up to 2 years befor my body is back to normal,however im still getting a little concerned that my body will start getting to used to laxitives.should i be worried? and im curious to know if anyone else has a similiar issue and how you are dealing with it.

Hi.  Your constipation is most likely due to your colon not yet returning to its full functionality.  What you can do aside from using laxatives, is to increase the amount of fluid and fiber that you take in.  You should be drinking at least 10 glasses of water a day. As for fiber, you can get this from eating fruits and vegetables, whole wheat bread and oatmeal.  Changing your eating schedule will also help you avoid constipation.  Instead of eating three large meals, you can break this down into six or more smaller meals.  Drink lots of fluid during your meals.
