should I have a ca 125 blood test?

by Bridget127, Apr 07, 2008 01:04PM
One month ago I had a mastectomy/reconstruction surgery.  I had ductual carcinanoma but it did not go to the lymph nodes.  I also had a melanoma cancer on my leg and a precancerous melanoma in which all were removed.  The doctors opted for no chemo or radiation because they feel a clean margin was obtain in all three spots.  Recently I heard about the ca 125 blood test and was told by my sister, it would be wise for me to have this done given the fact that I had these other cancers.  Are these cancers warning signs of ovarian cancers?  Should a ca 125 blood test be done or possibly a PET scan completed?  She I bring these up with my doctors?  I have not yet met with and oncologist.

Thank you

Dear Bridget127:  The CA-125 test is a tumor marker that is used to follow ovarian cancer that has been diagnosed.  It should not be used as a screening tool, in general.  Having had a cancer does increase a person’s risk for developing another cancer but not necessarily ovarian cancer.  You should discuss with your oncologist whether seeing a genetic counselor would be in your best interest.
