SPINAL DETERIATION

How serious is spinal deteriation?my boyfriend was just told he could have this infliction.he has'nt seen a specialist yet .his symptoms are head,arm,hip,leg pain,numbness often when he is at rest and he has problems keeping an erection which we both beleive is connected to the problem at hand.can anyone explain the procedures that he will have to look forward to endure and what the length of recovery could be? im very concerned as to how this will effect his life and career.
