Inheriting thyroid disorders

How likely is it that a teenager, with parents who both have hypothyroid, with inherit the disorder?

The chance of developing hypothyroidism increases with age and having a close relative like a parent with this condition can increase your risks of developing this condition as well.

In order to provide a complete a risk assessment, it would be important to talk with a genetic counselor who could review your family history in detail and provide you with more detailed risk information.  You can find a genetic counselor through the National Society of Genetic Counselors website or through companies like mine, DNA Direct.
