Is it asthma

My son is 8 years old and has recently be diagnosed with asthma.  His only symptoms have been chest tightness and shortness of breath occasionally.  Without the cough or wheezing I just am not conviced that it is asthma.  My nurse practioner did a PFT test.  HIs FEF25-75 was 70 before the breathing treatment and 107 after.  His big airways were 1.28 with is 62% before and 76% after.  My question is, is the PFT the best test for determining asthma and is it realiable, without my idea of the main symptoms I just can't rule out that it is something else.  The nurse practioner (who is the ashtma specaillist in her doctor's office) put him on advair twice a day and allbuterol when needed.

The tests seem conclusive. Yes, the PFT is a very reliable test. You could ask for a chest x-ray to rule out any other disorder and put your mind at ease. Hopefully the medication will ease his symptoms.

Good Luck.
