help for troubled son

by shawn85, Apr 08, 2008 09:42AM
My 19 yr old son has a history of substance abuse, depression/anxiety,1suicide attempt, and antisocial personality signs w/o violent tendencies. We had to ask him to leave our home because of another relapse (meth use). He is on Celexa and was seeing a counselor for drugs and depression. We were miserable with him at home and miserable with him gone because we're sick with worry. He seems unable to avoid drugs and decisions that harm him. We are at a loss of what to do. We have suggested he try to live at a halfway house or something similar so the consequenses of his behavior will fall directly on him, but we fear that he is not able to care for himself because of his depression and mental problems. Can anyone suggest anything that could help our son?

Has he been to treatment?  Generally, once in treatment they will put you in a half way house so you can learn to live again.  For yourself, Alanon may be something you and your husband may want to check into.

i am 21 years old and suffer from bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.  i also struggle with substance abuse.  i have relapsed twice since i got out of rehab 2 months ago.  addiction is an extremely hard thing to deal with, especially for family members.  there have been many times when my parents wanted to give up on me.  i was honestly unfit to take care of myself.  the best thing my parents have done for me is not give up on me.  they continue to fight my addiction and disorders right beside me.  no matter what don't ever give up on your son.  i would also look into getting him into a treatment center.  i hope that i was able to help you out.

I think they have places where one can go and stay, and get tratment,if he does not want help. he will not go unless, he is court commited, if he keeps this up, what will happen to him,/ you cant help hin unless he asks for help, unless you court commited, and that is what you will have to decide, as i know you love him very much, and i know that you care, but it is to hard to live with opne that is addicted, i have been where you are    I wish you luck     jo
