LARGE FIBROIDS AND CANCER

by DIANA1953, Apr 08, 2008 09:57AM
I have a 44 y/o female with very large fibroids compressing the urethers and compromising renal function. She was advised a hysterectomy and I concur with it. My question is should I do a CA-125 and CEA for possible malignancy?

Hi.  Since she's already undergoing hysterectomy, I think the better diagnostic procedure would be to simply have the pathologist do a histologic examination of any mass taken out during the surgery.  CEA and CA-125 tests are not warranted at this point and would only add to the cost of treatment.
