acid or alkaline

by Porge304, Apr 08, 2008 10:07AM
I am 58 yof w/hx of kidney stones X3 and gout.  I also have multiple sm. cysts on kidneys, in r. hand and r. knee joint. My kids are encouraging me to be real careful aout how acidic my diet is.  I already know that protein is my 'enemy' and I am not an avid coffee or cola drinker either. I got an MRI report of stones in the left kidney but they haven't moved yet [it's been about 10 months i've known] My old urologist takes the position of 'if it doesn't hurt, leave it alone.' I don't know if I should try to have lithotripsy or not.  I sure do dread another 'attack'  it is more painful than labor pains. By the way, I have 2 IDDM brothers, one on dialysis, the other on his way to it. I am not diabetic [yet, anyway] but I DO have parkinsons.  What's your opinions on the diet and should I go on with 'wait and see' what happens?

Hi
I have been through 5 kidney stone surgeries in the past.
Two lithotrip surgery and i found a Doc years ago who new about keeping alkaline.
I would ask your doctor about Potassium Citrate  1080 mg twice a day and if it would help your situation. It alkalines the blood but make sure it does not interact of course with other meds.
My stones never returned after being on this for nearly 4 years now.
Not sure if it will dissolve them but it is a good preventitive measure.
There are many types of stones, uric acid and calcium  phosphate types. I had a combo of each and was on a really good diet. Just a stone maker i guess. But you are right wow the pain is something to be reckoned with.
Hope this helps a little
Dan
