Stomach problems, sleeping problems, etc., on Omeprazole...

by cwoolbright, Apr 08, 2008 07:15PM
After moving from a small town in the country to Miami, FL my senior year, I was put under a lot of stress and started developing stomach problems and had trouble sleeping. I was tested for H pylori and it was negative. I was put on prevacid and prilosec otc, but this only worked a little bit some of the time. Now, I'm on Omeprazole and things were going great at first. I felt back to what it was like to be normal. Now, however, it isn't so great. Every second of the day, no matter how much I eat, I am always hungry... starving hungry. Eating only relieves this feeling while I'm eating, then it returns. I've gained weight because of this. The stomach feeling is a twisting, gnawing soreness that is just like this overall numb pain in my abdomen probably right above my bellybutton... like when you are starving, but just really painful. Sometimes there are sharp pains. This wakes me up in the early morning every night. I've also had a definite increase in dizzy spells and, especially when I'm in a car and the car turns, my equilibrium is completely thrown off and I have to close my eyes. Thank goodness I haven't been driving lately...
To cope with the pain, I come home from school and go to sleep. I wake up and I go back to sleep until dinner because when I am sleeping I don't feel it until I wake up. This only worsens my awful sleeping schedule.

A few things that may or may not be related... I have always hiccupped A LOT my entire life. Not just little hiccups... my friends crack up and say it's like a frog. Sounds like a huge man having hiccupping convulsions, at least once or twice a week, especially when I laugh at something.
And I choke really easily. Sometimes when I was a kid I would just start choking and my mom would ask if I was okay. I'd say "I choked on my own spit!" This happens often, especially with room temperature water.
One more thing... I used to always complain because I'd "throw up in my mouth and swallow it" ... could be acid reflux, but wouldn't the Omeprazole fix this? I still get this sensation coupled with nausea on occasion. I've doubled my dose and all of these symptoms persist.

My diet is really good for a teen: limited sugar, no soda, no fatty or fried foods, no junk food, I'm fairly active and exercise regularly, and I've cut down to two percent milk. I've also cut down on tomatoes and things high in acidity.

I have to stop eating so I can fit into my prom dress, lol.
We are scheduling an appointment with a gastroenterologist whenever we find time because I am very, very busy.

Any suggestions? Anything would be appreciated...
Thanks so much!!!
