fushion or microdiscectomy

by fracture, Apr 08, 2008 07:52PM
I had been diagnosed with spondylolysthesis 7 years ago. I have learned to live the pain since. It has been constant ever since to some degree or another. I have flare ups about every 4 months or so. However, 5 months ago I lifted something too heavy and heard a "pop" and felt a "pop." I fell to my knees both legs went out and I was in excruciating pain instantly. I am a dentist and pulled a few strings and was able to get an epidural  within the same week. Since the first I have had a total of 6. I have seen two surgeons, both back specialists, who have ordered a total of 3 MRI's. The first, I was told by two outside sources was the best in the country, said that I had ruptured 3 discs. However, because of the "spond" he would recomend fushion. But, because I also was blessed with some scoliosis it would not be indicated. He recomended PT and see what happens. Well, PT was great it relieved all my back pain that I have been in for years but did nothing for the radiating pain down my rt. leg. The PT'ist recommended seeing a neurosergeon who again ordered an MRI, oblique? this time . He said it showed a bilateral fracture of the pars with a ruptured dics and fragment occluding the foramen to my rt. leg. He also recommended a fushion but said he thought he could perform a microdicsectomy...remove the fragment and hence the leg pain and numbness. However, I would be at a greater risk of future ruptures due to a more unstable L5. Idon't want to take off 8 weeks of work for a fushion but would be willing for the discectomy. I would just like to be able to run again. I was a marathon runner and Ironman triathelete. I miss my old life. This couch potato safalete does not fit me well. Any sugggestions?
