Are there different types of Psychiatrists?

by lesliee, Apr 08, 2008 10:59PM
My father passed away a couple years ago.  Since then i've gained 80lbs, been in a depression that feels like i'll never climb out of, & i've also seen a total of 6 therapists/psychiatrists. My depression increases with my weight.  I'm currently on Trazadone, which has really helped me sleep, and somewhat improved my moood, but the weight hasn't changed, and my desire to hide under my covers for the rest of my life hasn't improved either.

Are there Psychiatrists that are more active participants in therapy? The therapists/Psychiatrists i've seen pretty much sit there and listen and they're all really nice, sometimes empathetic, but inevitably i eventually feel like twiddling my thumbs & i'm not sure what else to say.  I know i have to fix myself, but allot of times, i just don't know what else i can say.  Yes, all these horrible things happened, yes i feel like ****, yes i keep eating because i feel like ****, and i feel like **** because i keep eating...

But...   Is there  a point that i can expect to start working towards a solution instead of just regurgitating everything i'm unhappy about?  I've stuck with one for about 9 months now, but i feel like i'm just searching for things to say...

Are there types of therapy that are more interactive, maybe that can ask me more pointed questions, or give me homework, or something so i can feel like i'm moving towards a solution instead of wallowing in my own depression?

It's my first post, and i'm not even sure if i'm in the right forum, but thanks in advance for any advice =)

You are in exactly the right place.  Yes there are some psychiatrist that are more active but most are not trained to deal with the compulsive overeating associated with depression.  I would advise you to stay with the same person you are working with but go to my site, www.shrinkyourself.com, and enroll in the program.  That is where you will get the homework and a total focus on your eating behavior.  Read what others have said about the program before you make up your mind to take it.
