Seemingly unrelated symptoms

by mel1121, Apr 08, 2008 11:32PM
Last year I started having a feeling of a lump in my throat, and was eventually diagnosed with reflux.  I was content with 40mg nexium for a while, before new symptoms began.  I began having intense abdominal pain (mid-epigastric), mostly at night.  I am doubled over with pain radiating to my back.  I have also begun to have increased bowel movements, but not diarrhea.  I am currently going to the bathroom anywhere from 1-5 times a day, averaging around 3.  My doctor has sent me for all kinds of testing, most of which has been fine.

I've had an upper endoscopy with biopsies of my esophagus and stomach (Normal)
CT scan of my head and neck (Normal)
Thyroid Ultrasound (2 very very small cysts, but otherwise normal)
Labs (About every 2 months)
Upper GI Series (Normal)

I have been creeping towards becoming anemic for sometime now, but now I officially am.

Hct 34.5 (35-45) Low
Hgb 11.6 (11.7-15.5) Low
Rbc 4.24 (3.8-5.1)
Transferrin saturation 12 (15-50) Low
Serum iron 51 (40-175)
TIBC 427 (250-450)
Ferritin 5 (10-154) Low
RDW 17.1 (11.0-15.0) High
Serum B12 374 (200-1100)
Serum Folate 17.2 (>5.4)
TSH 2.1 (.4-4.5)

I have also been tested for H. Pylori (Negative) and Lyme Disease (Negative)

I don't know what to do.  Can anyone make sense of this?

What about your cortisol? Has that been tested. Should if not.

Yes, actually.  My cortisol was checked through a 24 hour urine specimen.  The level was 43, and I believe the range goes up to fifty.  One doctor thought I had Cushing's syndrome.

I also had a Sed rate done, a while back. It was 23 (1-25).

Do you have any other symptoms like headaches or muscles aches? Have them check you serum calcium AND  ionized calcium AND  pth (parathyroid hormone). Serum calcium in a common test the other two aren't usuallly run. Could be overactive parathryoid. You might want to check out info on that at www.parathyroid.com.

I had a metabolic panel, about a year ago.  At that point my calcium was 9.2 (8.5-10.4).  The other tests were never given.

I've always had headaches and I have muscle aches only after strenuous activity.
