subtle calcifications

Have had calcifications for many years.  Last year mammogram showed microcalifications, told to return in 6 months.
Returned, told to return for annual mammo which was also in 6 months.  April 1st went for diagnostic mammo,
center had just purchased a digital mammo, this was used with the CAD.  Told to have a stereotactic needle biopsy,
Went yesterday, the needle biopsy was in complete as the subtle calcifications  were unable to detect while
on the table taking photo's.  Took another digital mammo while there and same results.  Told I could have a biopsy,
but the first radiologist who referred to the Breast Center and a doctor I should wait 4 months a have another mammo.
The problem is they have nothing to refer to since these calcifications showed up using the digital mammo.

Please give your opinion

I went through a similar situation.  My 1st mammo was not a digital, so when I had this one they saw microcalcifications and said need to get a biopsy.  I also went for the stereotactic and they were unable to do it.  So I then went and had a needle localization with biopsy a week later.  I think it is better to just get it done, but that is a personal decision.  I was told I should get the biopsy not wait.  I can't imagine waiting 4 months wondering if it is anything or not.  The three weeks I waited from the time they found it until I had it done were hell.  It was benign, thank God, and I am glad it is done now.
Best wishes,
alicia

I am 55 years old had recttal cancer removed 4/o8, and luckly no bag and no treatment. I have dense breast with micro calcification. Had a biopsy of right breast 2 years ago and was fine. Went for mamo and sono this past Monday and they saw microcalcification that they say is suspicious. So next friday I go to the hospital for yet anothet biopsy.

My question is, for my surgery in april for the rectal cancer I had a chest cat scan and a full body pet scan. Both came up good. Should that help alittle in my fear of breast cancer. Also this is my third surgery on my breast. Wouldn't it be better ot have them cleaned out of all breast tissue nad have implants put in to stop the every year worry??

Hi,

Microcalcifications are tiny specks of calcium in the breast tissue that need to be investigated further to rule out cancer.

The microcalcifications if large or clustered are usually biopsied for a confirmed diagnosis. Most calcifications are usually benign.

The usual plan of follow up is a regular breast self exam, a clinical evaluation in 6 months and a mammogram every 6 months or annually or as your doctor advises. A biopsy is done for a confirmed diagnosis and to rule out malignancy.

You should carry on regular breast self examinations and report any abnormal features to her doctor.

Get the investigations repeated in 4 months to see for any change in the lesion and then discuss with your specialist if any active intervention is required.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
