pre-existing condition

by dkcrn, Apr 10, 2008 04:57PM
I have been laid off since 2/8/08. I was never notified that my insuracne benefits were terminated with the company. Last week I checked with the provider and was still covered. I called their insur rep to inquire about cobra coverage. She confirmed that I was still insured and that she would 'check' with the owner as to how long they would be covered. She also told me that it was probably too late for the owner to backdate cancelling them. Today I got a letter from the insurance company stating that my benefits ended 2/12/08. I am afraid that I am out of time to avoid a pre-existing condition clause when trying to get some insurance set-up. Any advice?

Dear dkcrn,

If you are concerned about pre-existing conditions, contact your former employer & ask them to enroll you in COBRA retroactive to 2/12, as soon as possible. Keep in mind if you do that you would have to pay for COBRA retroactive to 2/12. Your employer is responsible to inform your insurance carrier about your COBRA eligibility. Meanwhile visit www.ehealthinsurance.com for free quotes & contact a licensed broker/agent (like eHealthInsurance) to find out how your pre-existing conditions may play a part in you qualifying for individual health insurance.

Sincerely,

Amir
