Lump on upper, outer gum... Infection help?

by Weioo, Apr 11, 2008 01:07PM
Let me start by saying that as a kid I never tended to my teeth/gums the way I should have, then I brushed and did some mouth wash, but I was lazy and rarely flossed until about a year ago(I'm 24 now). With that being said....

I've had some work done to say the least, most of it when I was in my younger teens. At one point I had a rather deep filling in my farthest back, top molar on my right side. For the past 4 years or so I've noticed that my gums between that tooth and the tooth in front of it will swell up, on and off, for a couple months at a time. This probably happens 2-4 times per year and typically occurs after I inhale a large bag of beef jerky or something else thats tough and REALLY gets wedged in between those teeth. My gums in that area have always been very sensitive.

The last few times it had happened I went to my dentist who prescribed some antibiotics. The last time it bothered me, I asked about a root canal and he told me that he had already done a root canal right there. I don't understand why my gums in this small area (between those 2 molars, top, right side) always become inflamed and irritated, which eventually causes an infection nearly every time.

I called my dentist about it this time and he told me to refill my previous antibiotic prescription (tetracycline, 500mg) and I take one 4x a day. I've been taking them for about 4 days now with no results. I read online that bacteria may become immune to tetracycline over time, maybe this is my problem?

I'd like any and all help/information/suggestions that some DDS may have. I have an appointment for a cleaning in about 2 weeks and if it isn't gone by then my dentist will finally be seeing me...again.

Seeing a periodontist is advised.
