Could I be pregnant? Can a copper IUD stop menstration?

by elizebra, Apr 12, 2008 12:54PM
I had an iud (copper) inserted on February 15. I experienced pain and spotting that eventually stopped after about a week. It was almost like I had a period. Then on March 2nd I got my "regular" period - heavy bleeding and cramping lasting about 6 - 7 days. On or about March 30th I started experiencing what I would describe as menstral cramping that lasted about 10 days. It was occasionally quite painful.  I kept expecting to begin my period but it never came. Now, I am 10 days late. My cramping has lessened and almost stopped. I obtained a pregnancy test 2 days ago and it was negative. What on earth is going on? I'm quite concerned.

Hello,

Irregular bleeding after placement of an IUD is normal and can occur over the first three months.  Talk to the provider who placed it if you continue to feel unwell so they can properly advise you.

Best regards,

Most people with copper IUD (Paragard?) do not have a cycle at all, some have a cycle on every few months or so. Your dr. should have ensured that you were not pregnant prior to insertion--most prefer to insert during cycle, so pregnancy hopefully is not the issue here.  If it is bothersome for you to miss a cycle you may want to consider another method.

i have the copper i.u.d. for about 7 months now.
from what i have read online, as well as what my doctor told me, there should be no indication of irregular periods. but what you should expect is more cramping and heavier bleeding.
i recently missed my first period, am late, took a pregnancy test and turned out negative.
i will go to the dr soon if i dont start
but i have searched all over the web and havent heard anything about the non hormonal copper i.u.d. to mess up the cycle of menstration
