Toileting Issues

by ryansmom2008, Apr 12, 2008 10:35PM
I am the single mother of a 5 year old son with  Asperger Syndrome.  He has been toilet trained for over 2 years now, but recently in the last month and 1/2, he has had major issues with going to the bathroom on the toilet.  He opts instead for going in his pants, or in the bathtub, on the carpet.  I don't believe that it is medical, although I am exploring those issues with his doctor to prove or eliminate the medical possibilities.  The reason why I think it is not medical is that he only does it at home and at times albeit infrequently will actually use the toilet.  My main source of concern however is his seemingly ambivalent attitude towards the issue.  He will sit in his soiled underwear happily sitting in his room reading or playing.  He has also made some attempts to hide it or clean it up, although very poorly and making the mess worse.  I am at my wits end, the mess he creates not only on my carpet but he also smeared it on my walls.  He is a very happy, very wonderful and very amazing kid.  His toileting issues are also a part of what I see as a larger, more troubling regression.  I am fearful for my son and don't know how to help him.  Any suggestions?

Sandra

I am the parent of a 12 yoa with aspergers.  We too are struggling with this issue for many years.  Molly has been potty trained since 2, but also CHOOSES to wet herself then be in some type of denial.  Recently she does hide the wet clothes and even to the extent of putting them in her clean underwear drawer!  Nine pairs of wet, disgusting underwear!  We did the medical route reason and to no avail.  The mental health expert is also at a loss as this is not typical aspergers behavior.  I (sorry) am happy to hear we are not alone with this.  Molly is in middle school and I fear she will be teased terrribly about this.  She also then carries a terrible odor with her!  We force her to shower and change clothes when this happens (which she hates) and pray that this will pass.  Now we have her wearing poise pads (normally for incontinence).  She most recently has outright said "no" to wearing them and sneaks them off if we physically force her to wear one.  We are seeking help on this later this week.  I will keep you posted!
