bleeding after surgery replace period

by 2timesnow, Apr 13, 2008 02:15PM
Hello doctor,
I had a laparoscope to remove a cyst on the 25th of March, which resulted in bleeding for 4 days following.  I was expecting to menstuate on April 7th, but it has not arrived yet.   Would the bleeding I had prior take place instead of my regular period?  Or would it make my cycle change?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, I appreciate it.

Hello,

I suspect in removing the cyst your corpus luteum was removed (the corpus luteum is the remnant follicle [or cyst] that releases an egg during ovulation.  Once it releases the egg It begins to produce progesterone in anticipation of conception.  When conception does not occur it senses this, stops making progesterone and the drop off in progesterone triggers menstruation).  The above description shows why if the corpus luteum was removed during your surgery you would have bled after your surgery.  Your period should normalize over the next month.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
