Possible to have Low Ionized Calcium but High Total Calcium?

by shadow08, Apr 13, 2008 06:07PM
I am curious. I have had two total serum calcium tests about 8 months apart that show slightly elevated levels (10.3 and 10.4 mg/dl)

My ionized calcium was taken in between these tests and came out as 0.90 mmol/L  (normal range: 0.90-1.22)

Does this make any sense?

No.
You'd think it would show high.

Aparently your body is compensating and binding more of the calcium.

I'm not an expert on calcium or anything, but after reading about ionized calcium a little, it seems it should be high.

What does Ionized do you the body that regular calcium suppliments don't or cannot do? I'd really like to know but can't seem to find out.
