Hpv and Throat, Head, Neck, Mouth, Lung, and Eye Cancer

by billyboy783, Apr 14, 2008 10:54AM
I hope some doctors reply to this.  I have been getting all kinds of conflicting information from my doctor as well as the internet...  I have read that hpv is everything from "something thats no big deal, and that most of the population has it" to "a life threatening disease that causes a dozen types of serious deadly cancers in both men and women".

I recently passed it onto my new girlfriend and the guilt of what I have done is eating me alive.  I just need to some answers!
1.) is HPV as serious as they say?
2.) how often should I be getting checkups and from what kind of doctors?  Oral Medicine Specialists (for oral HPV), an ENT (for throat, head and neck cancer)?
3.) are you permanently contagious? some say yes, some say no...some say only women build immunity, not men..!?
4.) Some say there's test that can detect the oral cancers, some say not.  Whats the deal?

I've read that after you've been diagnosed with the oral cancers, that 50% will be dead within 5 years..  That it gets into your lymph nodes and spreads to all major organs.  I dont even have health insurance right now for christs sakes!

Read the doctor's STD forum for infor about HPV.  It's not as bad as you are making it out to be.  Don't feel guilty - you didn't even know that you had it.

You're not going to die from it and neither is your GF.
