50% of women that bleed during pregnancy go on to carry a full term baby.  But no, period-like bleeding during pregnancy is not "normal" although it does not always result in a negative outcome - each case is different and all you can do is get the appropriate monitoring to see what your situation will bring.

Good luck!

I had bleeding that started spontaneously during my second pregnancy which was caused by ruptured blood vessels in the anterior portion of my placenta.  The blow of blood lasted for hours and was quite heavy in the beginning.  I went on to carry my baby to term.  Actually, he arrived at 36 weeks but he was healthy.

Another thing you might want to ask your doctor to check for is a possible ectopic pregnancy.  I suffered an ectopic pregnancy when I was 28.  I had no idea that I was even pregnant!  Around 3-4 weeks into the pregnancy, I noticed a brown discharge.  Brown discharge is characteristic of an ectopic pregnancy and many women think that it's their mentrual cycle, which is what I thought it was.  A couple of weeks after that, my fallopian tube ruptured and I awoke with severe abdominal pain.

You need to contact your OB right away, if you haven't already.

All the best to you.

I hope everything will turn out fine for you too. Has your doctor suggested an ultrasound?
