asbestos exposure

by bobsaget, Apr 15, 2008 12:43AM
So I was hanging out in an abandoned fire pump shed for about 1.5 hours.  The building was the right age for asbestos and hadn't been in use since the late 90s. During my time inside my girlfriend leaned against the wall and got herself covered in a white dust which I brushed off, and in doing so got some in my mouth and definitely inhaled some.  It was clearly a lime taste, though i hear asbestos has no taste or smell, anyway i spit it out.  then I kinda made out with her after that too...  Basically I'm wondering if this WAS asbestos are we both going to get skrewed in 15-50 years with cancer?  I just turned 17 and that would sort of ruin my life but I would rather live knowing it than getting a nasty surprise.  Thanks.

Hi.  I don't think your risk of getting mesothelioma (cancer of the pleural lining) or lung cancer is going to be significantly increased from a one time exposure to asbestos (you're not even sure if the building has this material).  The studies which show a link between asbestos and cancer found such an association in those with chronic exposure, i.e. miners and other workers with occupational exposure, and those who have been living in asbestos lined houses for years. Just be more careful where you go with your girlfriend the next time around.
