Penis and Scrotum Itching

by foolishpleasure, Apr 15, 2008 05:29PM
Doctor,

Thank you for your time. I am 4 weeks post a very brief protected encounter with a female sex worker. I have detailed this encounter on the STD forum for the experts there. 10-15 seconds of protected oral on flaccid penis with condom, no vaginal penetration. Probably some crotch to crotch contact in unsuccessful attempt at arousal. Again very limited time probably 30 seconds and protected with condom. STD forum doctor opined this was a very low to no risk exposure for STDs and that no testing was needed. NP at the local Planned Parenthood concurred.

My problem: Approximately 3-5 days post this encounter I became very aware of a persistent localized itching/burning on the right side of my glans penis down on the lower ridge and at the margin where the shaft meets the glans. Maybe there is a raised bump or two on the ridge, but it's hard to distinguish from the normal anatomy of my penis. The itching/tingling/burning sensation can radiate down the shaft and the scrotum. Mainly right side. My scrotum can get pretty red and so can the ridge of the glans. But really there is no definitive rash, blisters, lesions, scabs, discharge, burning on urination, etc. Usually looks pretty normal. But I swear the itch/tingling/burning sensation is very real.

NP diagnosed tinea cruris - jock itch, and recommended OTC anti-fungal for a week. I've been washing and drying diligently for a week, applying Lamisil twice a day. It provides relief, but I don't feel that the condition is actually getting better. The itch returns. I haven't been scratching at all. Research online indicates jock itch doesn't typically involve scrotum/penis. I don't have the obvious innerthigh/groin rash. Some redness/line in the crease of inner thigh. What do you think, fungus, yeast, candida/thrush, allergy to nonoxynol-9, stress? How long to resolve with topical anti-fungal? I do have history of tinea-pedis, mild recently. Have appointment with my doc next week. Driving me crazy. Thanks.

I agree that this does not sound like an STD or a situation that would merit testing for an STD.  I also agree that this does not sound like jock itch,  It sounds to me like mild irritation at most, with a big dose of STD-anxiety.  I think you've done quite enough research, in person and on the internet.  I think you should keep the area moisturized with a non-medicated cream, and that you should forget about it.  Your doctor can confirm this next week.

Best.

I recently had been experiencing a dermatitis like rash around my scrotum but it never itches or gives me problems. I also have some spots on my arm and some on my chest nd stomach, although they are not that prominent or huge in size. I first thought that it was a ringworm but upon a recent visit to my doctor i found it ws dermatitis nd he gave me a homeopathic course and asked me to make a return visit after a week, If the problem persists he will give me something topical to put on it. But i have been researching on dermatitis on the internet and I found out that they are supposed to itch but I experienced no itchiness as yet. Besides that, the rashes on my scrotum have been spreading and i thought that i would get a second opinion. I still don't quite know what it is...please help. Thanks

My Doctor is treating me for Pruritis Scroti.  We have tired various lotions but it does not
seem to go away.  I have had it for over a year.  The Doctor tells me that it may never go
away.  In this day and age that is hard to believe.  This continues to itch me all the time.
Some of the lotions are Pramosone Cream 2.5%, Desconide 0.05% Cream, Sarna,
and Elidel1% Cream and others.  Any help would be appreciated.  I am desperate.
