Anyone on Off Label drugs for weight loss - can't accomplish anything w/three little kids

by mdsoccermom, Apr 16, 2008 07:31AM
I'm 37, have 3 kids under 4 years old, and I've found that since having the 3rd one, I can't get anything done.  I have no motivation, no energy during the day, I just wanna veg out with the kids, and I'm eating constantly.

I have ballooned up to 210lbs, and I am normally around 160lbs, so I'm depressed about my weight situation.  I can't even be bothered to go to the gym - which is something I did daily.

I've heard that drugs like adderall can help you lose weight - is anyone else on anything to help them get stuff done and get through their day?

There is no quick and easy solution.  You must eat less, eat right, and move more.

Talk to your doctor first about your depression, and see if a few counseling sessions might help.

I was a lot like you--I felt depressed about a lot of issues, and it manifested itself in eating to self medicate.  You feel better for a little while, and then you feel worse b/c you ate, and then you eat more to make yourself feel a little better again.

I got up the courage to go to a Weight Watchers meeting, even though I'm not a joiner and actually thought it would be sort of lame.  But by that point, I had reached the last straw about being out of control with food.   I found warm, caring people, friends, laughter, and a sense of comraderie.

If you've tried it before, I urge you to go back again and recommit with an open mind and a determined spirit.  You can try this or that pill, and they may work for a short while, but unless and until you address what AND why you eat, you will not make a permanent change.

I have lost almost 50 pounds in a little over 6 months.  I just now felt comfortable joining a gym, and surprisingly, I love it!  I don't have small children, but some gyms have a program for children so that Moms can work out, too.

You will feel better about yourself when you make a small change, and stick to it and see it through.  At first, I only told myself I would go to ONE meeting.  That was all I would commit too.  Then I said "Ok, I'll give it a week".  I really gave it my all and tried  my best to follow the program, and was thrilled with my initial loss.  The rest is history.

If you don't try some sensible program, next year you will be 220 pounds.  The year after that, 240 pounds.  Eventually, you will decide to do something, and it will be all the harder.  Do yourself and your children a favor, and start now.

Send me a message anytime.  I'll listen.

ditto to peekawho!

I also agree that it may be depression that is getting you down.  The lack of energy and motivation are signs of this.  Being home with 3 children is an amazing feat in itself.  You seem to need time for you. When "dad" comes home, force yourself to go out for a walk...you need some alone time.  The next time you go food shopping, make healthy choices.

I am also a Weight Watchers member, but I do it on-line.  If you feel you don't have the energy to get up and go, I recommend this.  Once you begin to eat healthy, you will feel healthy and have more energy.  It will also give you a sense of accomplishment which will help lift your spirits.

Best to you and your family!

I took Effexor for depression. It's side effect is weight loss, but more so because it makes you feel a little jittery and not really want to eat. So yes and no on that.

However, I dont think they ever give Effexor purely for its weight loss issues. Every medicine has side effects, including this one which kind of gave me a styrofoamey feeling. Nothing really mattered. Never happy, never sad - just there. I would rather be kind of chunky and happy.

Your post gives me courage.  I realize I'm 9 months pregnant but i started this pregnancy mildly overweight.  I used to be so slender but once I turned 40 (and not only that reason), I put on 40 pounds.

I plan on confronting this issue post-partum.  I already started by eating sensibly & exercising actually more while pregnant but I'm afraid that once the baby's here, I'll fall back into old habits.  This pregnancy I've gained 17 pounds.  While I'm no joiner either, your advice is good & for some reason gives me hope that I too can get the weight off and more importantly feel like I used to when I had more energy.  Thanks very much & congratulations on your weight loss - that's fantastic.
