Meds and glaucoma

by doobie07, Apr 16, 2008 04:47PM
It seems that glaucoma is listed as a possible side effect for just about every prescription medication these days. I am taking Remeron (mirtazapine, for anxiety and insomnia) and, of course, glaucoma is listed. How big a threat is this? Do I stop taking the pills? I don't have glaucoma and last check-up had healthy optic nerves, although moderate cupping. it's not listed as a common side effect, but it is mentioned. thanks

The main thing is to make sure your angles are open.  Simply call  your ophthalmolgist and ask him if it is OK for you to take it.  I get calls like this all the time - no big deal.

Thank you, doctor. How would I know if my angles were closed? What symptoms would there be? My opthalmologist left the practice and I haven't found a new one yet.

Find a new one and have gonioscopy test to see how open the angles are.
