Post Nasal Drip Nightmare

by elvira333, Apr 17, 2008 05:58AM
I have had post-nasal drip for some years now.  I first suffered from sinus problem until 1998 when deviated septum diagnosed; then had an operation early 1999 to fix the septum.  Solved first problem, at least I could breathe and no longer get sinus infections, however from then went downhill.

Hypothyroid symptoms appeared and I was eventually diagnosed with low thyroid (have posted questions about this on Thyroid forum), but since my septum was fixed, I also started having lots of problems with post-nasal drip.  Just before operation I was given Prednisolone for a week.  I had to go off it - started bruising and felt like I was on some sort of speed drug - really hyper... The post-nasal drip has never gone away.  Gets worse when I get a cold very thick mucus and I sometimes get frightened when I go to bed that I won't be able to breathe because it's just like clag.  I'm always swallowing which gives me sore throat constantly... Drs just tell me to use Rhinocort which has never worked none of those things do.  I also have a multi-nodule thyroid goitre.  I try not to drink or eat dairy products this seems to reduce mucus only very slightly, not enough to make much difference.  Steam, etc. no good (in fact steam usually blocks up my nose)

I'm wondering whether it is some sort of "genetic" problem, i.e. mother has same problem, father had chronic asthma, or whether just a plain allergy.  I have cat and dog and live on a dirt road but had problem prior to living on a dirt road.  Always had animals, but doesn't improve when I'm away from them for short periods.  Could it be related to the operation, or even a symptom of the thyroid disorder?  I.e. low thyroid seems to slow everything down.  I'm very frustrated by it because it is sometimes very embarrassing and because throat is always full of mucus very self conscious of bad breath when I talk.  Does anybody have any suggestions for anything that is worth trying?  I'm wondering whether I need to go back to a nose specialist but if it is just an allergy that is another expensive path I'll be going down - I've already been down the "thyroid" specialist path and at the end of the day got nowhere but just an empty pocket and still feeling bad!  Any help or advice would be welcome.
