Helping understanding Candida

by elmtree, Apr 17, 2008 01:50PM
For about a year and a half now (I had just turned 15 if that helps at all with answering my question?) I have been suffering from vaginal thrush, and it's been extremely recurrent. I read that vaginal thrush only has to occur 3-4 times a year for it to be considered reoccuring however I'm getting it soooo many more times than that, I can't even put a number on it. The longer it's been since I started getting it, the quicker its been coming back. And now I've got to the point where, every time I treat myself, it comes back within a matter of days. Even when I use fluconzole pill AND a Clotrimazole cream together to treat it. I used the cream because I mentioned to my GP that I was experiencing itching around my anus as well as around my vagina. The thrush came back though, like I said, in a matter of days and I've just given up now and try and put up with the itching... not that I enjoy it much!

However, my GP didn't let me know that I could be getting thrush so many times WITH the itchy bum because I could have too much Candida in my intestines. I'm asking whether these two would be related? For example, if I do have an overgrowth of candida in my digestive system, could that be the reason I am getting the vaginal thrush so often? I feel I have finally found the answer to all my problems!

I've also got many of the symptoms of Candida in the digestive system, especially shakeyness when hungry, fatigue, muscle aches, extreme food cravings (especially sugary foods), really bad bloating and gas (it makes me avoid social situations to be honest cos it can get really bad sometimes...), stomach cramps, symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and crying and "down" spells (although I know that could just be down to me being a teenager haha...)

My doctor told me cutting out sugary foods would help me stop getting my thrush back but I can't when I crave it so often and get so scared when I get shakey and dizzy that I feel the need to grab a load of chocolate and eat it.

I went on the contraceptive pill (Microgynon) about a month about my first attack of thrush, and am still on it.

So, basically, I'm asking if the recurring vaginal thrush could be a symptom of a more serious problem - the Candida in the intestines. And do the other symptoms I've mentioned sound a lot like it?

Also, how would my doctor diagnose it? And how would it be treated?

Thank you so much for your time,
Emma. xxxx

I just came back from naturopath doctor and I have the same problems as you. Basically he told me that I have Candida in my system, intestines, stomach (probably from taking too many antibiotics), recently I got sore throat and that's another sign of thrush, so he put me on 12 days cleansing diet, which you can purchase at health food stores, basically I can eat all the meat and vegetables I want, no flour, yeast, sugar, cheese, domestic fruit, no tropical fruit. For snack you can have rice cakes with almond butter, you can eat almonds. Basically you can look it up on the internet as far as what you can and cannot eat. It is little bit drastic, but Candida affects all kinds of things in your body the same as you describe. I am going to give it a try, because I don't want to live with it, it is making my life miserable.
