high blood and protein in urine what is it

by katsmeoow, Apr 17, 2008 08:11PM
Have high levels of blood and protein in urine.  Glucose levels and blood pressure are fine.

I'm about 41 female About a 10 days ago I was surprised when I went to the restroom and noticed I had red bloody urine. At that time I had no pain only the urge to go to the restroom more so but no other symptoms.  I went to my doc and she gave me Cipro for about 7 days redid uti test and my blood pressure was 107/70 and the glucose from the previous test showed glucose levels were in the "normal' range.  Ok let me just say I'm a bit freaked out. My biology teacher told us a story of how he was hiking the grand canyon and fell off is horse and had bloody urine (knowing he had damaged himself ), and knew he needed medical help.  Here I am no injury and I'm have red bloody urine. Hopefully you can understand my worrying.  2nd time at docs to redo test urine look normal but test revealed high levels of blood and protein.  Had to get a ultrasound todau and I have trying to look up healthy ultrasounds of kidneys vs unhealthy or kidney stones and cancer vs healthy with no luck I might add.  if you have any info please let me know thanks for your time reading this.  Kaatsmeoow

Hi,

Infections in the urinary tract are indeed a common cause of blood in the urine, hence the treatment with antibiotics.

Other causes would include kidney stones, but this would usually be accompanied by other symptoms such as pain.

Another reason is inflammation on the filtering units of the kidney (in which there is destruction of the lining of the filters usually due a defect in the immune system). The blood may be the presenting sign.

If you are still passing blood, an examination of the appearance of the blood (morphology report) may help define at along what point in the tract the blood is coming from, in order to narrow down the search for the etiology.

The ultrasound is also a good step forward.  Stay positive.

Hello again,

I'm glad that you are actively seeking information.

You could try this link http://radiographics.rsnajnls.org/cgi/reprint/2/2/153.pdf
this document is a reviewer there are photos of normal and common abnormal conditions. There may be some differences with the quality of the sonograms and the reproduction of  images may vary. One of the difficulties with sonograms is that the operator technique also affects the output.
