OraQuick Finger Test at 4 weeks?

by NYCT504, Apr 18, 2008 01:10AM
I just had an OraQuick finger-stick test at exactly 4 weeks post-exposure. Results were negative (although she told me the results in less than 10 mins and I thought it took 20-30?)

Bottom line: is this conclusive enough to say that I'm negative?

Thank you.

no that is to soon but it is a very very good indicator they say most people will have detectabled antibodies by 25 days so 4 weeks is about 90 percent what was your exposure? wait test again at 8 weeks then 12/13 for conclusive result i highly doubt they will change

Can I get a second opinion from someone else on this? Is negative OraQuick finger test 4 weeks later sufficiently accurate?

by HSci34, Apr 18, 2008 03:30AM
A negative at 4 weeks is when approximately 90% of people will have tested poistive. You should wait at least 6 weeks before doing a test. At that point in time, virtually everyone will have tested positive (>95%). Your 4 week test is very encouraging, but not conclusive.

by NYCT504, Apr 19, 2008 03:08AM
I did it at 4 weeks because that was when they were doing free testing at my school. I think 90% are pretty good chances, the other 10% are likely people with very suppressed immune systems.

by lostone08, Apr 19, 2008 03:22AM
if your comfortable with that then you are but thats 90 out of 100 so out of 100 people who test at 4 weeks 90 will test positive 10 will not so if you think you are in that 90 than hey congrats

If you had unprotected vaginal or anal sex, you should wait until at least 6 weeks. Some suggest a 12 week confirmatory test (very unlikely to change from 6 weeks).

HSci34 is correct , a 6 week test is a good indicator of final result ( 90-95%) but you should wait untill 12 weeks to get full confirmation - i just got my 12 week result yesterday and it was negative, but i took 12 week to get rid of my anxieties more than anything as all the doctors seem to say that a change from 6 to 12 weeks is very very rare...hope this helps , stay positive..

I didn't have any sort of risky unprotected sex, sooo do you think that my test is sufficient enough?

by stelutu, Apr 20, 2008 10:31AM
than what exactly is your exposure if any?
Like 80% of infections are due to unprotected sex.
If you did not have any, than good luck and congrats!!

did you share needles?

No, i got fingered (anal) and was afraid there was semen on his fingers

by Teak, Apr 21, 2008 08:52AM
You were never at risk for contacting HIV and you didn't need to test.

by NYCT504, Apr 21, 2008 02:31PM
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure that being fingered with semen on someone's fingers there is some risk

by Teak, Apr 21, 2008 08:09PM
No risk.

by crf250x, Apr 21, 2008 08:21PM
If the guy had semen on his fingers and (assuming) his fingernail lacerated (which is possible) her anus then YES IT IS CONSIDERED A RISK; a small risk. Come on people, don't misdiagnose someone - we weren't there.

NYCT504 just test at 3 months just to be safe, okay? Your 4 week test isn't conclusive enough according to the guidebook. By making HIV testing a regular habit (given you change your sex partners on a periodic basis) not only are you keeping yourself safe, but others as well. Take Care - your almost in the clear. And yes, lots and lots of individuals who are HIV positive in deed test positive around 25 days, your 4 weeks is very good news....a negative 3 month test would be GREAT news.

by Teak, Apr 21, 2008 08:24PM
Finger has never caused HIV infection and never will. No one needs to test from being fingered. HIV cannot stay active outside the host. So NO FINGERING IS NOT A RISK. PERIOD...

Really? I didn't know HIV couldn't stay active....not being sarcastic at all....but are you sure?

by Teak, Apr 21, 2008 08:32PM
I'm sure.

by HSci34, Apr 21, 2008 08:46PM
As Teak said - fingering is no risk.

by wonggendeng, Apr 30, 2008 06:12AM
I think it's 90 % right. You are safe.
