GI problems, results of a mental problem?

by joey9999, Apr 18, 2008 03:07PM
Can anyone recommend a doctor in the Chicago land area that deals with mind body medicine?  I have been trying to figure out why I suddenly have started having GI problems back in August and they progressively got worse.  In all I've lost 35lbs, gotten nauseous and lightheaded every time I ate and would have to immediately go to the bathroom.  It gets worse when I get any anxiety at all about the littlest things.  I've seen both a doctor and a GI specialist and they cannot figure it out through tons of blood work and also having a upper & lower GI done.  I've been reading Dr. John Sarno's book he released in 2007 and so far I think that Mindbody medicine may work for my problem.  My problem has gotten slightly better and I am able to work out again and I put about 9 lbs back on since, but the problem remains.  Lately I have been gettin headaches about every day and seem to go away when I eath, though I don't feel hungry. I don't believe I have IBS since the medicine actually made me feel worse.  Any advice or recommendation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't live in the Chicago area but even though the medication you took for IBS didn't agree with you doesn't mean that it is not the problem.  Diet may help and there is a good guide for that... look up "Eating for IBS".  Even if IBS isn't your problem, the information and recipes may help you feel better.

About twenty years ago, I went to a market and bought fresh cherries.  I washed them when I got home and eat almost the whole bag.  From that day on, I had gastrointestinal problems.  I lost a lot of weight and developed an infection probably from something on the cherries.  It got so bad that I ruined the lining of my intestine.  It took a very long time for me to even come close to eating properly again.  I changed my diet and in time it got better but my digestive system has never been the same since.  I have GAD and of course that doesn't help my digestive health.  My psychiatrist once told me that it takes a split second for a message of fear to go from your head to your gut.  So, if you have a weak digestive system and you have anxiety disorder, chances are you are going to have IBS too.  I don't mean to scare you or suggest that is what you have but if it is, then it can be treated with proper eating, exercise and Imodium when you have an attack or if you anticipate going out for dinner and not know what food will be served.  It can be used as a precautionary measure.  There are other methods and treatments.  As I said in my previous post, look up Eating for IBS.  They have recipes and natural supplements that help most people.  It won't hurt to take a look at the site.
