Went to the doctor yesterday and she wants me to start Synthroid .05 1 tid.  As I take meds (Ursodial, Colchicine), as well as silymarin, Vit D (calciu, citrate), Collagen, multi-vitamin, I am wondering if I should try Lugol's Iodine in some form.  My insurance doesn't cover holistic medicine (hmo medicare) and my doctor doesn't know much about it.  My friend is a big follower of holistic medicine and suggested that I try applying a few drops on my skin to see how fast it is absorbed.  What is fast?  What kind do I buy (noticed many different % on internet! how much to take, where to buy as cheap as possible!  Is there any test for a level of Iodine in your blood?  As I am very careful not to take other things, eat a healty veg diet, no alcohol, no caffeine, etc. I am asking for some advice from all of you with experience.  Thanks.

The reason I am on here is looking for some information / confirmation of the efficacy of the iodine skin absorbing patch test. My wife and I both take iodine supplements, yet on her test she got these results:
Application at 3:30 PM; Pale yellow at 5:30 PM; Trace gray at 7:30 PM; No color 9:00 PM.

The guidelines we have (from an MD instruction sheet) say if color is gone in 4 hours, you have a severe deficiency; 8 hours => moderately low iodine levels. With sufficient levels, the original color remains there for 24 hours. My wife has been taking over 50 mg a day in a supplement. So, is this test valid? Beats me. If the test is valid, she has some sort of absobing problem. We'll have more formal result in a week or so, and will know more.

I have never heard anyone question the validity of the test, but for all I know, everyone flunks it!
